Brandon Sanchez Mejia is a Berkeley-based portrait photographer and visual artist whose work explores themes of identity, memory, and transformation through a refined and emotionally resonant lens. Known for his ability to create images that are both intimate and cinematic, his practice centers on capturing individuals at moments of personal significance—translating lived experience into timeless visual narratives.
His work is closely tied to University of California, Berkeley, where he began his career as a photographer for the Communications & Public Affairs Department and the Marketing & Alumni Relations team. In these roles, he documented a wide range of institutional narratives, photographing faculty, distinguished guests, student leaders, and public figures. Today, he continues this relationship as a registered vendor and supplier for UC Berkeley, where he is particularly recognized for his portrait work during the university’s graduation season.
Sanchez Mejia’s portraiture is distinguished by its balance of technical precision and emotional depth. His subjects—ranging from graduates and academics to artists and community leaders—are rendered with a sense of presence and intentionality that reflects his broader commitment to storytelling. His work has been commissioned for university campaigns, editorial features, and independent creative collaborations, contributing to a growing body of images that engage with both personal and collective histories.
In parallel with his commercial practice, he is developing a fine art portfolio that draws from his own experiences with migration, resilience, and self-construction. His ongoing projects examine the body, masculinity, and the act of being seen, positioning photography as both a documentary and interpretive medium. His work has been presented in academic contexts and curated showcases, with plans for future exhibitions and expanded institutional engagement.
Sanchez Mejia’s approach is informed by a broader engagement with visual culture, including cinema, contemporary art, and literature. This interdisciplinary influence shapes a practice that moves fluidly between portraiture and narrative, grounded in a belief that photography can function as both record and revelation.
